Wind Data

This 10-year program was made possible through a grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation. The Value-Added Sustainable Development Center (VASDC) of IIRA partnered with schools, farmers, rural electric cooperatives, municipalities and others to explore the wind potential in their communities.

A limited number of sites were selected each year to undergo monitoring of wind velocity. Sites were selected from applicants interested in future wind installations (small scale or utility scale) or genuine interest in wind resource data research. It involved the temporary installation of a 50-meter or 60-meter meteorological tower on or near a site that could eventually be used for a wind turbine. The wind monitoring program closed in 2015.  A Google map is available below to view IIRA’s Wind Monitoring Sites.

GIS Story Map “Wind in Illinois”

In collaboration with the WIU GIS Center, IIRA developed a GIS Story Map entitled, “Wind in Illinois” to visually illustrate and coordinate IIRA’s many layers of wind energy-related data, geography, meteorology, and public policy projects.  The Story Map contains visual information on IIRA Met Tower Stations and Data, ASOS Stations and Wind Speeds, Illinois County Zoning Ordinances, Illinois Wind Speeds at 40m and 80m, Utility-Scale Wind Projects >50MW, and links to additional resources.

This story map was developed based upon funding from the Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC, Managing and Operating Contractor for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy.

The Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs at Western Illinois University would like to acknowledge the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, U.S. Department of Energy for funding the project and the WIU GIS Center for the implementation and design. We would like to thank the GIS Center’s student employees Brendan Wallace, Alex Adams, and Alexis Araoz; and WIU GIS Center Director Chad Sperry for design expertise, as well as Meteorology professors Dr. Redina Herman and Dr. Marcus Büker for their advisement on the project. Special thanks to WIU ISP Renewable Energy students Joseph Puoplo and Rachel Mead for all their assistance.
