Are There Funding Resources Available?
The cost of wind energy has fallen dramatically since the modern era of wind energy technology began in the early 1980s. Although specific costs vary from project to project and from region to region due to differences in markets, wind resources, and economies of scale, the American Wind Energy Association estimates that the average cost of wind power has decreased by 90 percent over the past 20 years. At this point, a well-sited wind farm can be cheaper than any other new source of energy generation. As technology continues to improve and the market for wind energy grows, this downward trend in costs is likely to continue for some time. As with all energy technologies, wind power greatly benefits from supportive public policy. Incentive programs help broaden and develop markets for wind-generated electricity.
