Wind Maps Maps produced by the Illinois Wind Program were built upon using the Kriging interpolation method. The wind map grids have a resolution of 300ft x 300ft. Three major data sources were used in creating the wind maps:
- Data collected from the Illinois Wind Program (22 Sites)
- National Weather Service (48 Sites)
- Illinois State Water Survey (19 Sites)
for a total of 89 data points around the State of Illinois. The maps use a Natural Breaks (Jenks Optimization) classification method broke down in ten different classes ranging from 5 mph to 28 mph. The maps use the same classification for all 10m, 50m, & 80m maps, thus showing how wind speeds increase as you increase in height.
